This exquisite antique brooch dates to around 1900 and was likely made as a fine Grand Tour souvenir. The center features a raised solid 10K gold relief of the Parthenon, mounted on a 1000 fine silver frame accented with sparkling marcasites. The reverse bears the 1000 silver hallmark, a very high-purity silver, usually reserved for finer continental work, and an early C-clasp. The mixed metals (gold center, silver mount) were a hallmark of high-end Grand Tour souvenirs made for wealthy European and American travelers visiting Athens and Rome around 1900. A rare bimetal example of European travel jewelry celebrating classical architecture, beautifully preserved with original patina.
