An antique richly decorated Japanese lidded urn/jar with panels featuring elders in traditional dress, birds, trees, and flowers against a predominately black around the panel with gold gilt. A detailed work of art from the Meiji period (1861-1912)
The jar had the piece of paper in it when I got it, and it reads the following:
"Serenity
This design shows different scenes to represent peace. longevity. and happiness. Happiness is symbolized by the beauty of the birds, playing amongst the flowers. Longevity is symbolized by the tall Cybress trees and aged peaked mountains. While peace is shown by the elders gathering in a place of serenity, surrounded by nature's beauty. The pride and sentimental value of this artwork is clearly shown in these rich colours and with each painstakingly hand painted intricate detail."
