Hematite is a common mineral but it can grow in uncommon ways. One of the more exotic ways in which it can grow is in petaled layers stacked on top of each other eventually forming a flower of rose like structure. This structure is referred to as a Hematite Rose or Rosette. In Switzerland they are called Eissen Rose. This is very rare. Switzerland produces some of the worlds finest Hematite Rosettes. They are found at high elevations within the Alps and require full mountain climbing gear to acquire. When they are found, which is rare, they are highly sought after and quite expensive. This small specimen is an excellent example of an Eissen Rose from the Swiss Alps. The small crystal at the base is Adularia.
