Lovely pair of antique bookends, produced by Kronheim & Oldenbusch (K&O), New York, circa 1925. The set is in very good condition, with strong color and no apparent loss of paint.

Both bookends are bronzed spelter (a zinc alloy), with hand-painted highlights, and both have K&O's trademark fleur-de lis pattern and K&O shopmark on the back. The artist's mark, "J Pickarski" appears on the lower right front of each piece.

Both bookends depict paintings by the 19th C French master, Jean-François Millet (1814-1875). "The Angelus (L'Angelus)" depicts two peasants in a field, with a basket of potatoes, reciting a prayer, the Angelus. The prayer, together with the ringing of the bell from the church on the horizon, marked the end of the long workday.

This set is heavy weighing 8lbs.
Each bookend measure 5-3/8" Wx 4-5/8" H x 2-3/4" D
